Since June 28, 2025, the European Directive EU 2019/882 on the accessibility of products and services has officially come into effect in the member states of the European Union. This directive marks a significant step toward a more inclusive society by requiring that many products and services—such as Automated Teller Machines (ATMs)—be designed to be accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities.
In practical terms, this means that ATMs must now include features that enable autonomous use by individuals who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, or have motor or cognitive limitations. The goal is to reduce physical, sensory, or digital barriers that prevent equitable access to essential services.
In this context, the multimodal interactions developed in the Ability project—particularly the localized vibration technology—offer an innovative solution. In addition to possible interactions with artificial intelligence to obtain more information about the content displayed on screen, the system uses precise haptic vibration feedback to guide the user through the device interface. Instead of relying solely on the touchscreen or visual instructions, the user can feel directional cues or action confirmations directly under their fingertips.
This approach could make ATMs more intuitive, secure, and accessible—even without external assistance. It thus fully supports the goals of the directive while enhancing the user experience for everyone.
