Part of the ABILITY consortium participated to the AAATE 2025 conference, in Cyprus, two weeks ago. In particular, ULUND, OFFIS and CEA presented their work with the consortium at two sessions. ULUND presented the work they conducted on their audio-tactile prototype, namely a touch tablet with a tactile graphics overlay triggering audio upon touch and hence adding interactivity to the tactile graphics. OFFIS presented their work on using AI to facilitate access to digital images, in particular in educational contexts, by analysing and retrieving the important elements from the image (e.g. outline and stripes for a Zebra) and providing the corresponding text descriptions and output on a pin display. Finally, CEA presented their work on providing bar charts through different vibrations with the haptic tablet.

Overall, the presentations and project triggered interesting questions and discussions amongst researchers and practicioners in accessibility.

Image showing a slide displayed on the wall with on the right side a young lady pointing with her right hand at the top corner of the slide. The slide is titled Device and material. It shows the device, a touch tablet with a tactile graphics overlay attached to the screen but lifted up, to reveal the same model on the touch tablet. The upper corner shows the view of the map displayed as a tactile grapihcs

This image shows on the left side a young tall man standing up, talking about the content of the slide on his right. The slide is titled Educational Scenario 1: Fur Patterns, subtitled the AI integration process. The slide then shows a series of images of a Zebra, explaining the AI process that segments the image to retrieve the outline and the fur patterns, which can then be later adapted for display on a pin display.
Dr. Salous presenting OFFIS' work
The image shows a younb woman, looking at the slide displayed on her right, and pointing at the left part of it. The slide is titled Zoom on the Haptic Tablet. It presents a series of images showing the haptic tablet, the actuators glued beneath the screen, and the visual representation of the haptic chart. It also shows on the right the different layers composing the 10.5 inch tablet (namely the patch of actuators, the OLED screen, the tactile panel and the cover glass (part touched by users).

In general, the conference was interesting and not only technology oriented, with several sessions and talks on policies and social measures. It was very stimulating to meet with people from around the world (even as far as Australia) striving to not only improve but also endorse and fight for accessibility at a large scale with so many different initiatives.

In that respect, the conference introduced the Nicosia Declaration on Integrating Accessibility and Universal Design Across Higher Education Curricula, which was signed during one of the conference Policy Sessions: https://aaate.net/the-nicosia-declaration/.
